To the people who says its another simple port. It is not. It’sa mother ship port, meaning the biggest container ships could come here. And its the first of its kind in India.

Right now we depend on Colombo , Dubai and Singapore port for the same. We ship the containers in smaller ships from there as our present ports don’t have the needed depth of min 20m for the bigger ship to dock here. Viyhinjam its 20-24m, without any need for drenching.

This means 80percent of the exports and imports of the COUNTRY will happen through Viyinjam.
Also the port is nearest to the international shipping route (~18km) Colombo is 50km. This is huge. Could save fuel for the ships for crew change and other requirements.

Viyhinjam is also located so centrally we have access to both west and east side of India.

This will reduce our dependency on foreign port there by saving atleast around 220mill $ annually when in full potential.

There is more here , but the point is this is not just another port. This is the mother of them all. There is no other mother ship port in India. This will change the face of Trivandrum and thereby Kerala. Turbo charging its economy in the years to come .

Those who are saying that a port can't bring much change, look at NH66, it is developing at exponential rate, Kerala has got the most of NH66, remember, we once had no roads to show the rest of the nation as a good highway. A port needs transportation outlays to major parts of the country. While the NHAI is trying hard to build the highways, it is facing a lot of issues. The trivandrum cargo airport is no better. Basic train track doubling is just now being done between parts of kayankulam - ernakulam.

Kerala and the CPIM government need to ensure that the feeder transport system to and from the port is of top notch value. One only needs to come to mundra and JNPT to realise the importance of these secondary logistical systems.

Plus warehousing in trivandrum will be a concern. Look at JNPT in mumbai (Gmaps will show the true extent) , it's earmarked such a humungous area as storage and waiting area.

Vizhinjam will be a transshipment Port, meaning a hub for shipment movement from other regions. I am not sure what volume we have in kerala that Valarpadam cannot not handle. They operate at their 50% capacity.

A great advantage for Vizhinjam would be Adani, he has a major volume in India and beyond and Liners would support this Port as they know Adani will make this port succesfull( atelast put effort to) by using the natural depth which dont need dredging and proximity to international trade lane.

We have a competitor called Kolachel which is planned by TN govt trust (Port of Tuticorin i guess) with same depth and proximity to trade lanes. But maybe they cannot compete with Vizhinjam if Adani runs it. I guess he would bring prices down with his expertise. Also govt Ports is not competitive in most places. So traders in TN might use Vizhinjam if cost and lead time are less.

Truth be told the cost per cubic feet to import/export will come down for us( it will reflect in everything) if it is successful port, but it wont be a success story if we don't have industry here to export /import.

NB- Kochi has dredging problem( depth) which makes it a non feasible port as somebody asked why it failed.

Vizhinjam Port is obviously going to save lot of money to the Government and Private firms since India doesn’t have to rely with Colombo anymore, but what made you think that Adani Group or the Government is going to invest a huge amount of money to the development of just one city in the country? And after all It’s a Port, how is Medical or any other field outside shipping related companies be beneficial with it?

About the skyscraper part. I think much skyscrapers can be built in trivandrum, due to the severe height restrictions imposed by AAI, unlike  kozhikode,which has its airport in malappuram besides we all know there is no paucity of liquidity along the malabar coast.

There are stringent height restrictions in chacka-petta -east fort and height caps on builduings across the entire nh bypass up until kazhakuttam, so unless we get a new airport somewhere in the fringes of the city, we shall continue to bear the brunt of AAI's archaic height restrictions

This port is probably the reason why the snc lavlin case was transferred 35 times by the Central government in the Supreme Court. Until the port is finished and the centre gets whatever they need, pinarayi will remain in power. 

Vallarpadam, Cochin shipyard, and cochin refinery will grow in a mutually beneficial way with this port. 

It also explains why Adani bought Thiruvanthapuram airport. That will be developed as an air cargo airport.

While I understand the impact a mothership poet can bring in, vis-a-vis auxiliary infrastructure and supporting amenities, how far do you think it is possible? Like another comment said, all these auxiliary stuff is possible if the authorities can plan around this, and work on every connected aspect, be that the housing and transportation infra. 

I remember when Vallarpadam was being developed, the same was said, but years down the line, said auxiliary infrastructure development hasn't gone much because of less output from the port and lack of initiative(?)

if we play our cards right, we can be denmark of indian union. and i am excited for that. also good news is that for trivandrum according to comprehensive mobility plan, it has been suggested to develop kochi style medium metro system unlike the light metro which was in cards earlier. and this time they have included a new line for the nh 66 bypass to connect lulu, airport &amp; technopark instead of just old nh alignment. this is gonna be a decent length system for a city like tvm.

apparently they are working on dpr and it will be submitted in jan 24 for approval. i know i know, it has been dragged way too long, but i think this time it's gonna see a development.

I do think the port will bring significant change to Kerala. But I am afraid if that is going to be a good one. High rise buildings dont mean anything. For example compare gulf and scandinavia and see which one is better to live. Bangalore and Delhi is so much more wealthier than trivandrum, but not necessarily better to live. There is a chance that this wealth is going to get concentrated in very few people, increasing rich poor gap. And expect large influx of low skilled migrant workers, because who is going to not give up paying the minimum if they can.

Allmost all financial capitals around the world was a port city in the beginning. This is because the shipment financing and insurance is a huge business. I'm pretty sure that more national and international financial and insurance companies will set up shop in TVM and it could soon be a  financial capital of the state providing hundreds or even thousands of jobs in financial sector in the state.

I don’t know much about ports but when vypeen got Dubai world to build &amp; run the port I heard a lot of hype around it also, nothing changed for the area. The only commercial building “Alfa something”’is still lying empty and is used as wedding and photo venue 🙃 hoping for the best for vizhinijam also Adani knows how to run ports.

While it's not a complete pipedream, a port alone wouldn't bring development to a city or state. Even if the port becomes successful (that's another IF), it requires heavy intent and investment from government on associated infrastructure to make it the "economic revolution" that's being claimed here. Be realistic. Vizhinjam port may bring some investment to the state and the overall scenario might be better than before, but we will not be in a position to compete with Tamilnadu or Maharashtra in terms of industrialisation.

Let's break it down to the fundamentals. A port will be successful (and as a consequence the city/state) only if businesses use it. I think there's a high probability Adani will know how to run the port well so let's keep that out of the equation. Let's also assume that the port is not impacted by strikes and the other issues businesses face in Kerala. 

Case A: Vizhinjam is a successful 'non major  transshipment' port: In that case, most businesses in Kerala, some in Tamil Nadu and some in Karnataka should find Vizhinjam useful (reason I used some is because Chennai and other ports may still be a lucrative option for businesses). The sample space is not much in this case and hence the likelihood of Vizhinjam making a significant positive impact is low. 

Case B: Vizhinjam is a successful and major transshipment port/aka another Colombo/Dubai: For this to be true, it becomes a classic demand supply equation. So for Vizhinjam to be successful in this case, it needs a ton of businesses across India to ship their products out of Vizhinjam (only then will there be a supply of mother vessels). As others have mentioned in the thread, this demands an excellent domestic rail and road network (think of a business in Gujarat choosing to ship their goods to Vizhinjam vs shipping to Mundhra and out of Dubai). Sure, there are a ton of investments being made in this space, but I think we're still several years away from having the infra to support an all India scale transportation network. The second piece here is competition from Dubai/Singapore/Colombo (supply side challenge which could deter mother vessels from picking Vizhinjam). Adani would need to take a very significant hit to initial profits if they're to convince shipping companies to use Vizhinjam over the other options. So, IMO, case B is a possibility but more of a strategic bet.

In a nutshell, I see Vizhinjam driving some development and growth but don't anticipate it to have an outsized impact in at least the next several years. I'd be pleasantly surprised if that ain't the case. All that said, kudos to the team at Adani who made this big bold bet (I'm sure they are counting on Case B alone to justify the investment).

As an outsider I can say you dream high @OP and that good. Reality wise when making such comparisons I come doesn’t alone mean development. A few tiny tall buildings and job opportunities on paper doesn’t account to anything. The social and political culture has to change. This includes a load of things like nightlife, options for accommodation and job (tech and state of origin), east of doing business (startup or new company Kerala is one of the worst states to actually begin a new one), also guarantee of operations (hyp. If one of the major conglomerates acquired the said all this goes to shit innit?) , law (from autorick meter enforcement to cops upholding the existing ones).

While it is a good infrastructure to have, I think it will only make a modest impact in the short to medium term. One factor is geography, it is far too much into a corner of the country to have swift connectivity to the rest of the country and have access to dedicated freight corridors.

Also it will mostly cater to container traffic, whereas other major ports are set up to handle multiple types of cargo like crude oil, gas, coal, ore, palm oil, automobiles and bulk cargo in addition to containers. 



One possible thing government can do is to establish SEZs near the port, so that import/export dependedent businesses can be incentivized to utilise the capacity made available by the port.

Also by what I'm hearing it is also not a very large port interms of the number of ships that can be berthed at the same time.

Not sure which paper that is, but in Hyderabad all ads were paid for, by the Government of Kerala. No need to be outraged by looking at one ad or the other. Like in any other project, everyone involved wants credit, that's all.

If Kerala didn’t exist, India would still be here .. and there’d still be a port in the same spot, just under a different state or name. The port is coming up because of India, and it has nothing to do with who’s in power in Kerala. If the central government didn’t want it, it wouldn’t happen. Most richer states complain the Union government doesn't give us shit while feeding poorer states with their money. But one has to ask why?

Our Industrial complex is the reason why. These private and public industries extract resources from the states of Bihar,Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh and send them to the factories of Karnataka, TN, Maharashtra where they are processed and made of finished goods and exported. 

In the whole process, 

Factory setup - The Port states.
Export capabilities - The port States
The taxes and conveniences earned by who - The Port states.

What do the natural resources states earn?

Labor. No taxes for the state government since the taxes and fees are to be paid at the final destination i.e the The port States.

And we still ask why the Union government feeds them and not us.

This is the main reasons why the local bodies in BIMARU states are more corrupt and are likely to ask money.

 The port is an international port so without government  of Indias participation it won't get license to operate.
The Adani group has the blessings of the union government that is why they have  international airports and seaports under this group including the port of Haifa so it's better for the kerala government in the long run because it owns more than 50% if the union government spends more it will owned more of the port.

Do not spread rumors, urban naxals. what the state government had spent now, Rs. 5595 crores is only the initial investment of the total 28,867 crores. Adani will be investing another 20K crore by 2030. An initial investment is to be made by the state government to ensure the project starts off , as he cannot trust them. The central government's role is to convince the adani to invest and stand guarantee in case the state fails in its initiative.

This's absolutely normal for PPP model.  It's very similar to Kochi Airport, where KL had a revenue sharing model with Pvt entities &amp; Centre/AAI didn't have any stake. The Centre is not even supposed to give 818 Cr grants in such PPP projects, which they did.

Infact it's KL Govt's stupid move(or rather a move to do more corruption) initially to go for a PPP model, against the BJP/Centre suggested public/Govt model. (Under Sagarmala project, because of it's sensitivity and Geo-strategic importance)

We call this "Lulu-Model" in TN. It basically involves first family of the Govt aggregating all their loots abroad &amp; bringing it back via a mega Pvt Investment ala Adani or Lulu. The KL First Family and the Son-in-law cannot have the cake &amp; eat it too !!!

How is it a zero sum game? It’s not like if Kerala uses the port facilities, then TN cannot and vice versa. If investment comes to the area near the port in either state, it can have spillover effects for the other state also
